Scribe: Need that Little Extra help to Organize Your Life...

Subscribing to Carl Pullein's YouTube channel which is about productivity, time management, and self-development has helped me begin to explore how to organize my life and students’ lives. His motto is, “Coaching, for when you need that little extra help.” There are many practical teaching suggestions for using technology to organize one’s life. One particular app, Evernote, can be used by the teacher and student when organizing notes. Evernote maximizes an educational experience. Note taking and notebook sharing should feel more natural. In our lives, we share things all the time such as photos, recipes, lessons, videos, notes, and much more. Evernote allows educators to share notes to a classroom community. For many including myself, it can be difficult to focus on note-taking and learning from the teacher at the same time. I know many times I would pass out notes to students and at the end of a lesson, the notes would be on the floor or recycled. How can educators help students learn the importance of learning from each other’s notes and staying organized? Often times notes can be lost, not easily accessed and not organized. With Evernote, one can access notes whenever and wherever such as images, students handwritten class notes, teaches notes and much more.  I experienced Evernote with my own information that I needed to be stored and saved. Often times with audio clips, notes, photos and searches I take a screenshot on my phone and just keep it in my photo storage. This often times makes it confusing because I have to look at my thousands of photos to find just one particular photo and this becomes stressful.
If I were to ever use Evernote in my classroom, I would create a notebook for each student so that they could keep all their work in one place. For students who need written notes for accommodations, the teacher can share written notes to students in the classroom. There is also an audio button for students to be able to create their notes and share what they learned. What’s great about Evernote is that it has the ability to recognize printed and handwritten text to distinguish what is written.
Improvements that I suggest for Evernote is to provide more data space for the free program. After I tried placing documents and photos in my Evernote account, it said that I only have 60 MB. That only allowed me to download two photos. In order to get more data space, you have to pay $4.38 a month. When you log in to the app, I did not think it was an elementary school student friendly and busy. If this app were free and had enough data to store more than two photos, I would use it all the time.
I do believe that if there was a way for teachers and students to share notes, it can play an important role in building a positive classroom community. Speaking, listening and thinking skills are so important for school success. We learn from communicating with others. By observing other students’ ways of note taking can be helpful with organization skills. I could see classroom note taking or managing filing papers as a classroom job because it can teach students about organization and being responsible.
